Marines On The Move
by U.S. Marine Corps Lance Cpl. Desmond Andrews
January 24, 2019

There are many aspects of recruiting that hold true regardless of location ... long drives, late nights and early mornings being a few. Every recruiter, however, faces a unique set of challenges and opportunities that is driven by their immediate environment; namely, the demographics, geography and market. For the recruiters assigned to the 8th Marine Corps District Mobile Marketing Team, the environment in which they operate is constantly changing.

The 8MCD MMT is comprised of a dedicated team of trained recruiters whose mission is to augment local recruiter efforts throughout the District’s area of operations, which covers more than a million square miles across 13 states. Through the use of the Enhanced Marketing Vehicle, a branded semi-trailer which includes an indoor simulated marksmanship trainer, and the custom, branded MMT H1 Hummer, the team is able to scale and tailor the experience to a variety of situations and Enhanced Area Canvassing events. Traveling with the handle “Marines on the Move”, the team is known for “bringing you the Marine Corps experience”.

Sgt. Travis Lindsay, a member of the team with over a year’s experience, says, “The assets available to the team create an experience that is unique in its ability to attract foot traffic.”

It is no secret that recruiting can be a demanding and sometimes arduous task. The Mobile Marketing Team is no stranger to these challenges. “The biggest challenge we face on the MMT is the time spent on the road. A lot of things are missed being on the road; things like PT, loved ones, and time off. After coming home, the biggest challenge is trying to catch up on life,” says Lindsay.

Like your typical recruiter, however, Sgt. Lindsay and the team know that the reward is worth the sacrifice. “The best part of being on the team is being able to help the local recruiters. I am beyond grateful for the opportunity to serve local efforts and love being part of the capabilities that we are able to provide. Traveling to every corner of the District to witness the challenges and demographics unique to each area and watch the recruiters overcome them makes this job worthwhile.”

In recruiting, it is well known that strategy and hard work result in larger payoffs and an increased ability to accomplish the mission. “Proper planning makes any event more successful. Making the effort to build anticipation of the team’s arrival translates to extremely successful EAC events. Ultimately, the MMT is a great tool to have at your disposal as a recruiter. Taking the opportunity to scan your AO and see where the MMT could be of use to you and your fellow recruiters can create a world of difference.”

In order to request the MMT or for more information about how you can leverage their capabilities, please contact your Recruiting Station’s Marketing and Communication Marine.
