A National Guard UH-60 Blackhawk helicopter crew inserted Border Patrol agents and a canine into a desert remote area southwest of Tucson, Arizona, where agents were able to rapidly deploy to apprehend two Guatemalan nationals attempting to evade arrest. The two men, ages 19 and 23, were dressed in camouflage and carpet booties, items often used by illegal aliens in an attempt to avoid detection. Both men had been apprehended in the past and now face criminal prosecution for illegal re-entry.
The joint effort by the U.S. Customs and Border Protection and National Guard was associated with Operation Guardian Support that allows National Guard soldiers to provide aerial support to the Border Patrol. Whether its surveillance using UH-72 Lakota aircraft or transporting agents in the UH-60 Blackhawk, Border Patrol agents are now have eyes and boots in areas not heavily patrolled in the past due to the vastness of southern Arizona’s desert.
