June 26, 2017 - Major Gen. Matthew Glavy (left) poses with Capt. Craig Nygaard and his family at Marine Corps Air Station Cherry Point, North Carolina. Nygaard was awarded the Air Medal for operations conducted during Operation Inherent Resolve while assigned to Marine Attack Squadron 231, Marine Aircraft Group 14, 2nd Marine Aircraft Wing. While forward deployed, Nygaard volunteered to return home early in order to deploy with a detachment from Marine Attack Squadron 542, MAG -14, 2nd MAW in support of the 26th Marine Expeditionary Unit’s mission. Shelley Cohen, 307th Bomb Wing command chief, place a wreath in front of the burning sword during the Khobar Towers 21st Anniversary Wreath Laying Ceremony at Eglin Air Force Base, Florida. On June 25, 1996, a bomb was detonated near the Khobar Towers housing complex in Dhahran, Saudi Arabia. Nineteen Airmen were killed and more than 400 U.S. and international military and civilians were injured in the blast. Of the 19 killed, 12 were Nomads.
