Machine Gun Kid WWII Veteran Reflects On Siege of Bastogne
World War II veteran Vincent Speranza (88) reflects about his experiences as a machine gunner during the Battle of the Bulge (December 16, 1944 to January 25, 1945) ... through his moving poem ... while visiting soldiers of the 1st Battalion (Airborne) 501st Infantry Regiment, part of the 4th Infantry Brigade Combat Team (Airborne), 25th Infantry Division, U.S. Army Alaska, at Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson, Alaska on November 6, 2013.
Vincent Speranza was assigned to U.S. Army H Company, 501st Parachute Infantry Regiment, then part of the 101st Airborne Division. He fought at the siege of Bastogne, Belgium (December 20–27, 1944), was wounded in combat shortly after the Battle of the Bulge and when the 101st Airborne inactivated after the war was transferred to the 82nd Airborne for a brief period.
