Cpl. Baughman was deployed with the 187th Infantry Regiment in September 2005 for a year-long deployment to Iraq. On July 17, 2006, Baughman's Humvee was part of a convoy participating in patrol operations in the city of Bayji, Iraq. His Humvee was hit by a RPG, severely injuring him. Later that day, Baughman died from his injuries.

For going beyond the call of duty and for giving his life for his fellow soldiers, on July 19, 2006, Baughman was posthumously awarded the Bronze Star Medal and the Purple Heart.
