I stood behind you, while my face was splattered with mud and blood. You were the last thing I saw as my eyes closed and dreams of my wife and children danced in front of my eyes, to close and see no more light. I saw you as I went to school and learned things I never knew I had a use for. I saw you at the football games and I saw you at church. I saw you at picnics I went to as a child, and in these last moments I saw you as blood and mud. I closed my eyes. I feel you wrapped around me as I join the earth with my brothers. And I in my dream of eternity see you consumed in flame for everything I lived for and feared to die for - my flag. My soul, my wishes in life are a sacrifice to you. Are you real or just a dream? My dream, my wants are eighty thousand brothers with me. Eugene Chambliss Copyright - February 01, 1985 |
