With
Veterans Day coming soon on November 11th, I cannot help but think of my father-in-law who
passed away last year on November 5th . . . just a few days from this
special day where he could again proudly celebrate being a veteran of
three wars.
And while my family is blessed that my father, a World War II veteran,
is still with us . . . sadly, there are not too many more Veteran Days
for him and the rest of our greatest generation.
Also, being a father of a Marine veteran, who served in Iraq during 2003
. . . this day has become even more important to me . . . Like other
parents, the 24 x 7 media coverage of his time in harm's way remains
vivid to this day.
Moreover, these thoughts resulted in the writing of my new poem,
Bravely Served,
which joins several of my other
poems that honor the veterans.
So, please take the time to
see if your church and/or another organization that you are
associated with is planning to recognize / honor the veterans and
troops on Veterans Day or the Sunday before. (You can attend your
community's Veterans Day salute, as well.)
In fact, there is no excuse for any adult American and most
children of reasoning age to at least say a prayer of thanks for the
veterans and the soon to be ones, our troops, on Veterans Day!
Isn't it worth a few
minutes of one's time to express heartfelt gratitude and praise
for those
who proudly served our great nation including those
wounded for life and all the fallen? With Veterans Day coming
