A1C Malik Barry ... Shaped By Struggle, Driven By Purpose
by U.S. Air Force A1C TaeLani Allen-Lewis
October 22, 2026

Growing up outside Dallas, Texas, Airman 1st Class Malik Barry, 31st Civil Engineering Squadron fire protection specialist, moved frequently, faced financial hardship and watched his family navigate challenges that often demanded more from them than they had to give.

Those experiences taught him to adapt, persevere and ... make the most of every opportunity. They are lessons that now shape the way he serves in the U.S. Air Force. “I grew up making the most of what I had,” Barry said. “Complaining wasn’t going to solve anything. There is always going to be someone who is struggling more than me, so I just kept moving.”

For Barry, perseverance was not something he first learned after putting on a uniform. He saw it at home. His mother remained a constant example as his family navigated difficult circumstances throughout his childhood. Even as an adult, Barry said he continues to watch her persevere while caring for his siblings.

“My mom persevered through a lot of things that my family went through while growing up,” Barry said. “Giving up would be failing them, and I have no room in my heart to do something like that.” That example, coupled with the support of his family, helped Barry continue moving forward.

“Throughout my hardest times, my family was there with me, struggled with me and woke up the next day with me,” Barry explained. “If they’re still here, I have no reason to fall behind.” After high school, Barry knew he wanted to pursue a college education, but the cost of earning a bachelor’s degree presented another obstacle.

A cousin already serving in the military encouraged him to consider the Air Force as a path forward. Barry enlisted, hoping for stability and an opportunity to pay for his education. What he found, he said, was more than he initially expected. “I was going in ready for free food and a guaranteed roof over my head, but I ended up getting much more than that,” Barry said.

His transition into military life brought its own challenges. Adjusting to the Air Force’s structure was initially difficult, but much like the changes he experienced throughout childhood, Barry adapted. A little more than a year into his Air Force career, Barry now serves as a firefighter, a responsibility he connects directly to the lessons he learned growing up.

“My work ethic came from the way I grew up,” Barry explained. “I was given an opportunity to go to school, so I made sure to use it. I look at being a firefighter the same way. I’m given an opportunity to save someone’s life, so we train for it.”

His work ethic is also evident to the Airmen who serve alongside him. “Barry is a hard worker, selfless and also a quick learner,” said Airman 1st Class Mikhail Harper, 31st Civil Engineering Squadron fire protection specialist. “He is calm and does not break under pressure when the job gets demanding.”

For Barry, those qualities were shaped long before he became a firefighter. During technical training in Texas, he first recognized how much his life had begun to change. When Barry returned home and spent time with his family and friends, he noticed the direction of his life looked different than it had before joining the Air Force.

“I realized when I hung out with my friends and family just how much different the direction I was headed compared to others,” Barry explained. “It was a weird feeling.”

The changes extend beyond where Barry lives or the uniform he wears. At the fire station, long shifts mean Barry and his fellow firefighters spend significant portions of their lives together. The close proximity can sometimes create frustration, but it has also created a strong support system.

“We uplift each other on and off shift all the time,” Barry said. “We empower each other to do better. We’re family at this point. If we weren’t tight-knit, the job would be worlds harder.”

That sense of community mirrors the support Barry relied on while growing up. His past has also influenced the way he treats the people around him. When asked about his reputation for wanting to make things better, Barry said his goal is simple: leave people and places a little better than he found them.

“I live trying to be kinder than I was the day before,” Barry said. “I know I am not perfect in the slightest, but hopefully I leave people smiling.”

For Barry, doing the right thing does not depend on whether or not someone is watching. That outlook carries into his life as an Airman and firefighter, where preparation, responsibility and teamwork are dire. Barry credits several coworkers and friends throughout his career with helping him through difficult moments and giving him opportunities to grow.

“I’ve had a few coworkers and even friends throughout my whole career who have taken me out of the dark a few times,” Barry explained. “I have definitely grown under their light.”

From a childhood marked by financial hardship and constant change to serving overseas as a U.S. Air Force firefighter, Barry’s circumstances have changed, but the lessons he carries with him have not. He remains motivated by his family, the example set by his mother and the belief that opportunities should not be wasted. As the oldest of his siblings, Barry said he was often placed in an adult role at a young age.

Now, looking back at the child who learned to adapt, persevere and make the most of what he had, Barry sees how far he has come. “I’ve grown a lot in this journey and I’m proud of who I have turned into,” Barry said. “I never expected myself to be in the position I am now. Younger me deserves a hug.”

For Barry, the circumstances that once challenged him became the foundation for who he is today. He is a firefighter who embraces every opportunity, an Airman who relies on his team and a son and brother who continues to carry his family’s perseverance with him. What began as simply learning to keep moving forward has become the purpose that guides him as he serves his country today.
