Remember What

He stood at attention and nothing less
With ribbons and medals pinned to his chest.
His eyes were closed in silent remembrance
Praying for those lost on nine eleven.

An eagle soared in and perched on his shoulder
And with that he never felt more bolder.
He looked to the eagle and saw a tear in his eye
And asked of him "why do you cry"?

The majestic bird responded;

"Look at my country, its falling to pieces,
My fellow Americans laugh as their pride decreases.
They mock our leaders like they can do better,
In times like these we need to come together.

Only two years have passed and many seemed to have forgot,
From what I remember this is what made everyone hot.
This is what made people want revenge,
Three thousand plus we needed to avenge.

Today they say we are just looking for a fight,
Two years ago, everyone though that was right.
We need to get these evil terrorists they all proclaimed,
So why are our soldiers stomped on and shamed?

The anniversary times two and I flew over my land,
How come I saw so many places without a single flag?
And of those that did, some were not at half-mast,
Did everyone already forget of the people that passed?

They say they don't need to raise a flag to show their support,
Sounds like laziness to me, for the time it takes is short.
They call themselves a patriot, yet cannot even display a flag,
While veterans in wheelchairs struggle to rise when they see that "rag".

I look at my country and see its people, mock and insult our military,
Seeing all this civil hatred makes the world pretty scary.
Isn't it them that want the peace? They are not making it any better,
They are beginning to brandish our country with a giant scarlet letter.

Just two years ago it was a totally different story,
Everybody in this land stood together with amazing glory.
Black, White, Yellow, Blue, it didn't even matter,
It was like we were a giant family, there was pride among all the chatter.

So soldier, this answers why you see a tear in my eye,
I've tried my best, there is nothing more, except to stop and cry.
There is nothing more that I can do to make my people remember,
Of the pain that we all endured in that dark and dismal September.

I do agree we need to move on, but does that mean we need to forget?
But I somehow feel we haven't even seen the worst of it yet"

The mighty eagle looked down at the soldier, and saw a similar face,
The soldier fought to keep his bearing as a tear dripped down his face.

"I never even though of it that way eagle, you make it all so clear,
The disrespect of my country is something we all should fear.
But that is why I stand here today, because I alone am strong,
And hopefully people will follow my views long after I am gone.

I stand with pride and hold my own because I love my land,
I fight for freedom and nothing more, and I thank you for having my hand"

The eagle soared off with widespread wings, and the soldier opened his eyes,
He squared himself and looked sharp as the flag began to rise.
It touched him deep inside today, now more than ever,
After his talk with the eagle, that he will forget...never.

He raised a salute to the flag when it reached the top.
So much pride was in himself; it seemed like days before he let it drop.
As he walked away, he stopped and slightly turned,
And raised another salute to the eagle, something he greatly earned.

As the eagle stood atop the flagpole, chest bulging out,
The soldier firmly said to him in a reassuring shout.

"Thank you eagle for having my back you know that I have yours,
I cannot and will not let you down, my appreciation for you comes in fours.
So I leave you today knowing that we will not fail,
We will fight, we will win, Oh eagle... we will prevail".
