Expressions from the Heart country as flag
Locked inside my heart
are words struggling
for new birth, to taste the
fresh air of
freedom...
words which need to
surface lest they
die a prisoner...
words which speak
of love
and devotion
of duty
and release from
the Pacific Isles
in some crazy war
in the days of
my youth...

Words of truth
and words of beauty
words of faith
and words of duty...
not only are these
words bound
but make a prisoner
of one who
holds them down...
deep inside
pressed down by
past memories...
chained and shackled
fast
held down
by the past
as with many old
Vets
who aren't back
yet...
but soon we shall
be laid to rest
where white crosses
mark the spot
as if America forgot...

I am not afraid
to die
and it matters not
where I lie...
but God allow these
unheard words to rise
from deep down inside
that I may die in pride...

Just an old WWII Vet
suffering with PTSD yet.

Author's Bio:
C. Douglas Caffey is a disabled veteran of WWII. He served (1944-1946) in the 509th Composite Bomb Group, 58th Wing, Air Photo Unit, 20th Air Force, United States Army Air Force. It was the 509th who dropped the atomic bombs on Japan and did the atom bomb tests at Bikini in the Pacific. A chronic sufferer of PTSD since WWII, Doug is a former college dean. He started writing poetry several years ago and though he doesn't claim to be a poet, he does claim to write from the heart.
