Fireworks country as flag
The Gulf War had ended
I had come back home
Back to school
Studying to be a nurse
Back to my job
Security on a construction site
Delivering pizzas part time
On a delivery
Near the high school stadium

Fireworks explode
I react
Instinctively
Door opens
Seat belt release
Roll from the car
Car continues on
No driver

Police officer stops the car
Another helps me up
"Gulf War Veteran?"
He asks
"Yes"
I respond
"I was the same way,
When I got home from Nam"
He says,

"Go home
don't go out
on the
4th of July"
