So Wise You Are country as flag
So wise you are my Vietnam veteran friend
With dampened eyes I read from your pen
Your heart is filled with memories from long ago
and from every heart-beat WWII memories flow!

So whether the war is here or there
Our memories we both can share
in walking the war-torn path on Earth
We rise above the din of battle curse.

Long may we walk together in two different worlds;
Separated, though we are, the tide of war swirls
leaving each of us with hollowness
until we're finally laid to rest.

And then the headstones reads the same
for war is war, and whose to blame
when red blood mingles with the soil
In foreign fields where heroes toil

When trumpets sound
from every mound
veterans shall arise
to muster in the skies!

Author's Bio:
C. Douglas Caffey is a disabled veteran of WWII. He served (1944-1946) in the 509th Composite Bomb Group, 58th Wing, Air Photo Unit, 20th Air Force, United States Army Air Force. It was the 509th who dropped the atomic bombs on Japan and did the atom bomb tests at Bikini in the Pacific. A chronic sufferer of PTSD since WWII, Doug is a former college dean. He started writing poetry several years ago and though he doesn't claim to be a poet, he does claim to write from the heart.
