Reservists from the U.S. Air Force and Coast Guard lived and worked in Kivalina, Alaska during April 2018 providing medical care for residents in support of Arctic Care 2018 ... that continues to build on the long-standing tradition of U.S. Armed Forces addressing the underserved community health and civic needs of the Northwest Arctic Borough.
The remote Alaskan village of Kivalina is located on a barrier island 80 miles north of the Arctic Circle and 1,000 miles northwest of Anchorage. It has been disappearing under water over the last decade due to rising sea levels and coastal erosion. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers expects that Kivalina will no longer be habitable by 2025.
