The Coast Guard assisted National
Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) members in
disentangling a humpback whale off Maui, Hawaii in March
2019. The sub-adult mammal had snagged an estimated 500 feet
of heavy gauge line with a buoy in its mouth causing the
tangled line to act as a bridle.
The combined effort
by the Coast Guardsmen and NOAA team successfully freed it,
as a companion humpback whale swam with it.
