Beginning in August 1942, the United
States Navy Sea, Air, and Land Teams, commonly abbreviated
as Navy SEALs ... have specialized in unconventional
warfare, counter-guerrilla warfare and clandestine
operations ... in all environments. Among the SEALs' main
functions are conducting small-unit maritime military
operations that originate from, and return to, a river,
ocean, swamp, delta, or coastline.
The SEALs are the
U.S. Navy's primary special operations force and are a
component of the Naval Special Warfare Command ... and have
evolved over history into one of the most elite military
groups in the world.
