June 13-14, 2021 - The Arleigh Burke-class
guided-missile destroyer USS Ross (DDG 71) participates in a
live-fire exercise involving sailors shooting machine guns,
the Phalanx Close-In Weapons Systems, and Mark 45
five-inch rapid-fire deck gun ... as part of African Lion
2021 (AL21) in the Atlantic Ocean.
The USS Ross (DDG-71) is the second
Navy ship to be named Ross, the first Navy ship named for
Medal of Honor recipient Donald K. Ross and the 21st
destroyer of her class. The first Ross, DD-563, was named
for David Ross, a captain in the Continental Navy.
African Lion 2021 is U.S. Africa
Command’s largest, premier, joint, annual exercise hosted by
Morocco, Tunisia, and Senegal, June 7-18. More than 7,000
participants from nine nations and NATO train together with
a focus on enhancing readiness for U.S. and partner nation
forces. AL21 is a multi-domain, multi-component, and
multinational exercise, which employs a full array of
mission capabilities with the goal to strengthen
interoperability among participants.
