The George H.W. Bush (CVN 77)
Carrier Strike Group (GHWBCSG) transits the Strait of
Gibraltar with entry in the predawn with sunrise occurring
while in transit.
The GHWBCSG is comprised of the Nimitz-class
aircraft carrier USS George H.W. Bush (CVN 77), Carrier Air
Wing (CVW) 7, Destroyer Squadron 26, the Information Warfare
Commander, and the Ticonderoga-class guided-missile cruiser
USS Leyte Gulf (CG 55). The GHWBCSG is on a scheduled
deployment in the U.S. Naval Forces Europe area of
operations, employed by U.S. Sixth Fleet to defend U.S.,
allied and partner interests.
The Strait of Gibraltar is a narrow strait that connects the Atlantic Ocean to the Mediterranean Sea and separates the Iberian Peninsula in Europe from Morocco in Africa. The two continents are separated by 8.1 miles (7.0 nautical miles) of ocean at the Strait's narrowest point between Point Marroquí in Spain and Point Cires in Morocco. The strait lies in the territorial waters of Morocco, Spain, and the British overseas territory of Gibraltar. Under the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea, foreign vessels and aircraft have the freedom of navigation and overflight to cross the strait of Gibraltar in case of continuous transit.
