Secretary of War, Pete Hegseth, visited Naval Air Station (NAS) Oceana to administer the oath of enlistment to new U.S. military recruits and personally recognize NAS Oceana Sailors for their exceptional leadership, professionalism, and dedication to the Navy and the installation’s mission, during a ceremony held at Apollo Soucek Field, onboard NAS Oceana on October 7, 2025.

The enlistment ceremony marked the official entry into military service of 60 young men and women from Richmond, Virginia’s Military Entrance Processing Station (MEPS). The enlistment ceremony included remarks, a formal swearing in, and a coin presentation by Hegseth to select MEPS personnel and NAS Oceana Sailors.

MEPS facilities across the United States are where U.S. military recruits undergo medical screenings, aptitude tests, and other assessments in order to determine their eligibility for enlistment in the armed services.

According to the Office of the Secretary of War, the event demonstrated the Department of War’s support for joint operations and the importance of a strong, well-trained force across all branches of the U.S. Armed Forces.

Hegseth arrived by plane to Apollo Soucek Field and was greeted by NAS Oceana Commanding Officer, Capt. Josh Appezzato; Executive Officer, Capt. Rob Littman; and Command Master Chief, Rob Barber; along with U.S. Congresswoman, Jen Kiggans; Virginia Delegate, Anne Ferrell Tata; and Virginia Beach Mayor, Bobby Dyer.

Prior to the enlistment, Hegseth addressed attendees and announced the formation of a new barracks task force, reaffirming the Department’s focus on improving quality-of-life initiatives for service members.

“In crucial ways, big and small, the Department of War is going to have your back like never before. Not just in the fight, but alongside your family, alongside your welfare. The basics, like barracks. You deserve the best,” Hegseth said.

Following the enlistment ceremony, Hegseth presented challenge coins to four NAS Oceana Sailors in recognition for their exceptional performance and contributions to the installation’s mission.
