The Defense Threat Reduction Agency (DTRA) 20
year history evolved from earlier U.S. Defense efforts ... starting with
the Manhattan Project, which then split into the Atomic Energy
Commission and the Armed Forces Special Weapons Project (AFSWP) after
World War II. AFSWP became the Defense Nuclear Agency (DNA), which
became the Defense Special Weapons Agency (DSWA). In 1998, DSWA was
combined with the On-Site Inspection Agency and the Nunn-Lugar
Cooperative Threat Reduction Program to form DTRA in 1998.
