PACIFIC OCEAN (Nov. 21, 2012) - Sailors stationed aboard the guided-missile destroyer USS Michael Murphy (DDG 112) navigate the ship to its new homeport of Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickam for the first time. The new destroyer honors Lt. (SEAL) Michael P. Murphy, a New York native who was posthumously awarded the Medal of Honor for his actions in combat as leader of a four-man reconnaissance team in Afghanistan. Murphy was the first person to be awarded the medal for actions in Afghanistan, and the first member of the U.S. Navy to receive the award since the Vietnam War. Two Hickam Field survivors, retired Master Sgt. Kenneth Ford and retired Col. Andrew Kowalski, stand for the invocation Dec. 7, 2012, during the 71st anniversary ceremony commemorating the 1941 attacks on Hickam Field. Ford and Kowalski were both enlisted in the Army Air Corps during the attacks. Ford was given a rifle and five rounds to defend the beach from another wave of attacks. Tom and Romayne McGinnis, parents of the late Spc. Ross McGinnis, unveil a mannequin replica of their son during a dedication ceremony which presented him as a Medal of Honor recipient held at the 3rd Infantry Brigade Combat Team, 1st Infantry Division headquarters Dec. 7, 2012. McGinnis was an infantryman assigned to the 1st Battalion, 26th Infantry Regiment. While deployed to Adamiyah, Iraq, McGinnis saved the lives of four fellow Soldiers by taking most of the impact from a grenade that had entered their vehicle.
