Located in the historic U Street NW neighborhood in Washington D.C., the African American Civil War Memorial honors ... over 200,000 African-American soldiers and sailors who served in the U.S. Army and Navy during the Civil War ... listing each by name. Their service helped to end the war and free over four million slaves. It is also associated with national holiday... Juneteenth (June 19) ... that commemorates the emancipation of slaves by President Abraham Lincoln's Emancipation Proclamation during the Civil War in 1862 ... with it officially becoming a federal holiday on June 17, 2021. Note... The African American Civil War Memorial is within the National Mall and Memorial Parks that has symbolized our nation and its democratic values for more than 200 years.
