Their service helped to end the war and free over four million slaves. It is also associated with national holiday... Juneteenth (June 19) ... that commemorates the emancipation of slaves by President Abraham Lincoln's Emancipation Proclamation during the Civil War in 1862 ... with it officially becoming a federal holiday on June 17, 2021.
