National Medal of Honor Day
March 25 was established by the United States
Congress as National Medal of Honor Day (NMOHD) that honors ... the
heroism and sacrifice of
Medal of Honor recipients of our
NMOHD was created in 1991, when President George H.
W. Bush signed Public Law 101-564 on November 15, 1990, which was
passed by the 101st United States Congress in November 1990.
It is celebrated on March 25 in association with the 23 men, who
participated in the Great Locomotive Chase ... that included the first
six Medal of Honor recipients ... William Bensinger, Robert Buffum,
Elihu H. Mason, Jacob Parrott, William Pittenger, and William H. H.
Reddickon ... who received the Medal of Honor on March 25, 1863.
Note: Marine Corps Medal of Honor
recipients receive the Navy MOH medal.
