Sailors Shift Colors On USS Nimitz Flight Deck July 1, 2026
June 23, 2026 - Sailors shift colors on the flight deck of Nimitz-class aircraft carrier USS Nimitz (CVN 68) as the ship gets underway, following a port visit to Naval Station Mayport in Jacksonville, Florida. Nimitz is underway in the U.S. 2nd Fleet area of responsibility as part of a scheduled homeport shift to Norfolk, VA. On a U.S. Navy aircraft carrier, "shifting colors" is a traditional naval ceremony. It refers to the physical relocation of the ship's flags (the National Ensign and the Union Jack) when a carrier transitions from being moored in port to getting underway at sea.
