USDA Forest Service Firefighters Dig Fireline July 28, 2026
July 25, 2026 - USDA Forest Service firefighters dig a fireline ... a cleared strip of land down to bare soil ... around a residence during a night shift on the Brewer Fire as it slowly burns down a hillside along its western edge in Central Oregon. Crews were staged near homes in a small community as part of Wildland-Urban Interface (WUI) structure protection operations to defend properties from approaching flames. More than 2,000 lightning strikes occurred across Central Oregon on July 15, 2026, sparking many of the region's large ongoing wildfires, including the Brewer, Coyote, Rowe Creek Complex and Akawa Butte fires, which have burned more than 270,000 acres as of July 25, 2026. USDA Forest Service firefighters protect public lands and communities from wildfires utilizing specialized teams including hotshots, handcrews, and engine crews.
