Black Sand Basin Stunning Aerial View September 1, 2026
A stunning aerial view of Black Sand Basin on Iron Spring Creek with Rainbow Pool, Emerald Pool, and Sunset Lake in Yellowstone National Park. Black Sand Basin is a colorful thermal area located in the Upper Geyser Basin of Yellowstone National Park, just 1.6 miles north of the Old Faithful Visitor Center. The basin gets its name from small fragments of dark volcanic obsidian sand covering parts of the area. Visitors explore the area via an easy half mile loop boardwalk trail. On March 1, 1872, Yellowstone became the first national park for all to enjoy the unique hydrothermal and geologic wonders.
